Washington School for the Blind

Project Description

Project:   WSSB New Physical Education Center
Location: Vancouver, WA
Surface Area: 29,100sf
Year Completed: 2007
Value: $9,000,000
Architect: Terra Architecture PC

This project included the demolition of the existing physical education center and construction of a new 29,100 square foot building. With a bent steel roof structure, steel framing and concrete tilt-up construction this facility houses a pool, gymnasium, athletic rooms, general administrative space and main lobby areas. The project was designed and constructed to obtain LEED Silver certification. The mechanical system was designed and engineered to use the pool water to help maintain the heating of the building. This helps reduce the environmental foot print for the building. The WSSB New Physical Education Center electrical system was designed using computer and system programs to reduce the school’s energy use. All of the storm water from the roof and parking lot filters through a bio swale; the largest true bio swale in the State of Washington.
